<itunes:summary>Dirty Words Design is a video podcast about Adobe InDesign and Graphic Design. Host Adam Jury brings you InDesign tips, tricks and "dirty" solutions for sticky problems. This isn't a "best practices" guide--this is problem-solving and making the best out of a bad situation. The videocast will also cover InDesign plug-ins, Photoshop, related resources, and maybe some relevant-to-designers OS X stuff as well.

InDesign CS4 doesn’t properly save Customized Style Mappings in presets when placing a RTF/Word file. Everything else [that I've tested] in a customized Import Option preset saves correctly, but no matter what you do — recreating the Import Option, saving it as a new name, etc — there appears to be no workaround for this bug, not without heading back to InDesign CS3, at least temporarily.

I’ve been dealing with this bug regularly and had put off submitting it formally to Adobe, and now I see Restore Style Mapping Presets: Report This Bug! from the amazing Michael Murphy. He has a great summary of the bug, and a prefab bug report to send to Adobe, and I’d encourage anyone who regularly works with InDesign to do so.

This isn’t a feature that has changed to work in a way that some people don’t like, this isn’t a new feature that isn’t fully-baked; this is a clear regression: the feature worked in CS3, it doesn’t work in CS4. I don’t think that we should have to wait for, and buy, CS5 to get this fixed.

This bug exists on both Intel and PPC Macs, in OS X 10.4 through 10.6.2, in InDesign 6.0.x (Creative Suite 4):

Centered Tables Cause Fit Frame to Content Abnormalities

Concise problem statement: Fit Frame to Content generates incorrect width when frame contains a centered table.

Steps to reproduce bug:

1. Create a text frame.

2. Insert a table.

3. Select the table and center the table within the text frame.

4. Select the text frame and choose Object -> Fitting -> Fit Frame to Content

Results: The text frame resizes to the correct height but is either too wide or not wide enough.

Expected results: The text frame should resize to be the exact width and height of the table, assuming that the text frame does not have an inset and the paragraph style that contains the table does not have indents.

Other Notes: I tested this on an Intel Mac using OS X 10.5.6 and the bug expresses in the same way.
